ellenscult: (fist of doom)
I know I've not been on LJ recently, and I know I've missed a few birthday shout-outs, a bunch of get-togethers, several parties, even a few sessions of writing group. I haven't done much, been many places, nor seen many people. All of which sucks, but on the other hand, my base energy level is finally creeping up above exhaustion, which is great. I'm feeling a lot happier too, which is ace. Still going to have to keep saying no to most invitations for a while, alas.

Right, brief update on what's happening in my life...

At Spring Bank I went down to Brecon to visit my older sister, took my husband, saw my twin and her husband, got my dog-fix from Meg the mad border collie and the 2 King Charles spaniels who are a little crazy, a lot cute, and make me laugh. Visited Hay on Wye for the literary festival, saw a lecture on undeciphered languages (and partially deciphered languages) which exist only in scripts - Mayan, Etruscan, Linear A, Linear B, a mention of hieroglyphics, etc etc - gets me very excited. Found the knitting stall, knitted a square for their festival blanket and nattered to a lancastrian guy (fellow geek) in whose family the men traditionally knitted knock-off arran jumpers for beer money. Had Pimms and strawberries and watched Star Trek again. Finished knitting that table runner - photos to follow at some point when I remember to put them up online. Read Divas Don't Knit, which is very funny, and knitted some more cardigan.

Friday I took charge of a company car. It'll soon be an ex-company car, as I'm buying it. It's a 2003 Peugeot 406 diesel estate GLX 110i, if I recall correctly, and is by far the largest, poshest car I've ever owned. Lots of electronic gubbins! Drives very well, which I know because I had to drive up the M1 from Sheffield back to York in Friday rush-hour traffic and intermittent pouring rain. Apart from the half-hour it took me to get onto the M1 and past the bridge where the cooling towers used to be, and the 20 minutes it took me to go the couple of miles from the Lotherton Hall junction of the M1 to the A64, the drive was no problem. Ikea trips are imminent! If anyone needs large things transporting, let me know!

Saw Dad on Saturday and had lunch at the Blake Head bookshop and cafe on Micklegate, which does excellent vegetarian food and was quieter than I've ever seen it on a Saturday lunchtime. Popped across the road to the Lamb CD shop which is one of a handful of independent record shops remaining in the UK and will probably fold in the next year or so unless sales pick up drastically. I bought a couple of Liszt cds and a copy of Brahms double concerto for violin and cello. Gave money to the hot, sweaty marines on Parliament St *big grin*, saw the HMS York Freedom of York parade (and am impressed by the diversity of the crew - male, female, black, white, asian - hurrah!), gave money to the Parachute Regiment, had happy Forces squee.

Unfortunately, the potter around town with Pa (following the drive on Friday) used up my oomph, so I didn't get back to the shops I needed to after he'd gone home, and I didn't get to visit [livejournal.com profile] house_of_scatha to wish him happy birthday. Many apologies! I did, however, spend the rest of the weekend either curled up on the sofa or in bed, and it was very quiet. Lack of food in the house means I have to go shopping this evening on my way home, or I'll be down to tinned tomatoes and maize spaghetti or rice...

Aaand... that's about it. I've cut my grass, chopped down another third of the bamboo patch, failed to fish out the mouse-trap and put it down in the shed. The house is untidy, I need more bookshelves, and does anyone want a large display/drinks cabinet-come-sideboard? It breaks down into 2 parts for transport, has electrics for lighting (never bothered plugging them in, tbh) and is free to a good home. If it'll fit in the car, I can even deliver it to your doorstep!

Oh, my Jesus year is over. I've reached the grand old age of 34 without transforming the world, but then again, I haven't been crucified, so I'll count that as a win. I haven't transformed my life in any spectacular way, but it's looking as though, finally, I'll have my health under control. I have, with [livejournal.com profile] ravenlas' help, transformed my finances over the last year, though, and that's something I thought would take another 5 or 10 years to do. And now all I have to do is get down to writing, finish things off, send them out. Practice the cello. Finish the cardigan (I'm up to sewing the sleeves in). Put up bookshelves. Get someone in to do the guttering and pointing. Maybe go climbing. Visit that family friend, who is home again, having treatment, and has been given a very encouraging 60% chance of survival. Change the world one smile at a time.

Oh, we're coming up on a software release at work. I'm behind - got lots and lots to do over the next 2 weeks, so I'm going to have to work evenings and weekends. Has to be done! So if you ping me on gchat and I don't answer, that's why. Sorry!

A plug: if you're after anything in classical or jazz music, please consider ordering through/purchasing from the Lamb CD shop on Micklegate in York. It's an independent music shop, it's struggling to stay in business, and it used to be one of the largest classical and jazz music shops in the country. If you're after a specific recording, even if it's been deleted, chances are they may have it, and it'll be available at its usual cd price rather than the 'it's deleted so we'll hike the price up to 60 quid' which Amazon have a habit of charging.

Another plug: if you have a special event coming up, need decorations for cakes or buns, consider ordering them from Anita's Sugarcraft. Anita makes all the decorations by hand, to order. She's a friend, and she's very talented.

Last plug: if you're in need of any games, dice, rpg stuff, go visit Jorvik Games. It's run by a couple of friends of mine, who will post stuff out to you, arrange to meet up with you to hand things over, or even hand-deliver items (in York, that is).

Keep the economy going! Go forth and buy stuff!
