1.What did you do in 2006 that you'd never done before?
Visited Australia, became engaged, received an engagement ring, became a Godmother, painted the attic, visited Chicago and California, visited my long-lost aunt, ripped dvds, went to the London Dungeon, went on a Jack the Ripper tour, shot a shotgun, stayed in Scotland, had a story bought and published, got mentioned on a podcast, knitted socks, jumpers, scarves, had a spa day, attended a family wedding.
2.Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don't do New Year resolutions. I had a resolution from the previous November to write a novel, which I did.
3.Did anyone close to you give birth
Oh boy, did they! 8 babies, no multiple births. Yay! And the existing babies are getting bigger, and are walking and rampaging, and they're just fantastic. I love it.
4.Did anyone close to you die?
No, not so far this year. *fingers crossed*, HaShem willing.
5.What countries did you visit?
Australia, US, Scotland, Northern Ireland.
6.What would you like to have in 2007 that you lacked in 2006?
A dog. A book contract. A wedding date. No debts.
7.What date from 2006 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Ooh... September 16th - my twin's wedding. September 18th - getting engaged to the most wonderful man in the world.
8.What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Finishing my first novel. Getting my first fiction sale.
9.What was your biggest failure?
Spending too much; not paying off more of my debts.
10.Did you suffer illness or injury?
Some. I was ill for my twin's wedding, bad as I was a bridesmaid. Still, Lemsip Max is my friend. And fairly recently I was knocked sideways by a bug. Well, not by the bug, but by the complete exhaustion it dragged with it. Oh, and a horrible travel-cough from the long trip to Australia.
11.What was the best thing you bought?
My video iPod! All right,
ravenlas bought it for me, so I'd have to say the iPod player that you put it in and watch films on, like a portable dvd player. It's just so cool!
12.Whose behaviour merited celebration?
ravenlas, for many, many reasons. My siblings, for many reasons. My next door neigbours. A bunch of friends. My parents.
13.Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
My dad's, sometimes. Some of the local kids. A dear friend's crazy ex-wife (using 'crazy' not as an insult, here, but as a diagnosis).
14.Where did most of your money go?
Food. Travel. The mortgage. Paying off debts.
15.What events did you get really, really, really excited about?
Ooh... Going to Australia; the conference in California; seeing my Aunt in Chicago; getting my new iPod; Hub and my first story in print; my brother's wedding; my twin's wedding; becoming a godmother; our engagement party; visiting London. There are probably more. I'm excitable.
16.What song will always remind you of 2006?
Nothing in particular...
17.Compared to this time last year, are you:
Thinner or fatter?
Fatter
Richer or poorer?
A little richer
Happier or sadder?
Happier.
18.What do you wish you'd done more of?
Writing. Phoning and visiting friends. Seeing family.
19.What do you wish you'd done less of?
Can't think of anything in particular.
20.How will you be spending Christmas?
At my parents' house, with
ravenlas and my brother Simon.
21.Who did you spend the most time on the phone with?
Probably my dad.
22.Did you fall in love in 2006?
Every day. With
ravenlas.
23. How many one-night stands?
None.
24. What was your favourite TV program?25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Not as far as I'm aware. I don't believe I hate anyone.
26. What was the best book you read?
Ooh, difficult. Nope, no can do right now. I'll have to come back to this one later.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery or rediscovery?
The Puppini Sisters, the Kaiser Chiefs, Marin Alsop and the Brighton Philharmonic, George Michael (Faith and Listen Without Prejudice only).
28. What did you want and get?
A pay rise, an engagement ring, a video ipod, the love of my family and friends, a fiction sale.
29. What did you want and not get?
A lottery win.
30. What were your favorite films of this year?
The Prestige, Superman Returns, Casino Royale, Pan's Labyrinth. Probably some others.
31.What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I was in Northern Ireland visiting a whole bunch of
ravenlas's relatives, so not much. I was 31.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
I'd say 'a teleporter', but then I'd miss out on nattering and doing crosswords with
o_faolain, and time to do whatever I like on the train. So I'd have to go with having a reliable DIY person around.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2006?
Lots of black; jeans and t-shirts, big boots. Also getting dressed up in high-heeled boots, skirts, etc. Comfort, mostly, and practicality for cycling. Which doesn't rule out skirts and high-heels...
34. What kept you sane?
ravenlas, books, Doctor Who, sewing class.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most
Mmmm... David Tennant as Doctor Who, I suppose.
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
The utter bias on reporting in the Middle East, including fabricated photos, allegations of massacres which never were, and dead people who get up again as soon as the journalists are done. The way that so many people are embracing violence and death, and the failure to find any way to come to grips with that.
37. Whom did you miss?
Friends whom I've hardly seen.
bob_stone, Sally, David in Cardiff. Dave Greenwood, still.
38. Who was the best new person you met?
That'd have to be Mark and Stephanie,
ravenlas's Australian cousins. And Lindsay, another cousin from N.I. And Hugh, who's just fab.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2006:
Keep putting in the effort. Even if the results aren't visible, it's still making a difference. And you'll feel better if you face it than if you put it off and avoid it.
