Party!
52 days and counting... 44 days until we fly. :)
So. The party.
I'm looking at venues. What we want is a buffet and dancing and a bar, at the end of March. We don't want the big sit-down meal and speeches. And we'd like to invite somewhere on the region of 150-175 guests, though if we have to, we'll cut it down a bit.
The racecourse is looking at coming in somewhere around 3k for this, which just makes me wince. A friend is enquiring for me at York St John's. Does anyone have any other suggestions?1
1. Of course, if you can actually fit 150 people in your house and don't mind letting us party there, I'd be very grateful. And amazed. 150 people in your house?!! My goodness!2
2. If you are/are best friends with/have blackmail material on the owners of a venue, and can help us out, that'd also be fantastic.

Ta muchly! I think I'd go for hall hire closer to home, though - easier for everyone to get to. :) It'd be really cool to be next door, though!

Failing that, Clementhorpe Community Centre, or that place on St Lawrence, or maybe the church hall near you where they hold ceilidhs once a month, behind the church on 5th Avenue?

I'm not sure where those are (apart from the church - St Aelred's?) - I'll have a nosey. :)

The Lawrence St place is next to the church opposite the working men's club at the Walmgate end - it's used as a polling station and I would think could easily hold 150. The one round the corner from you has some parking, which might be handy.

Clementhorpe probably isn't big enough - but other working mans' clubs, church halls and community centres would be. Perhaps The Crescent WMC off Blossom Street?

Judge's Lodgings

Other places I checked out were: Barley Hall & Treasurer's House - both way too small, Merchant Adventurer's - the Hall Hire is more than Merchant Taylor's - there is a choice of caterers but I found it all rather confusing and there are more things to sort out than at Merchant Taylors where, they provide things like flowers, cake stand and someone to bellow.
Food is expensive. That's a good offer from the racecouse. I don't think you're getting cheaper unless you hire a hall somewhere & order in fish & chips.
