Just in case anyone's interested (after the long and heated discussion last week), someone on a mailing list posted a link to this article in German - but giving world petrol prices in US$. As of last week, that is. We head the list, with petrol at $5.64 per US gallon, and Caracas is all the way at the bottom, with petrol at $0.14 per US gallon. Just thought it was an interesting list, although curiously enough, I don't see America on there... (but they're paying around $2 per US gallon in NY state).

Yeah, the fuel tax escalator was one of the few labour policies I wholeheartedly approved of. And then they scrapped it.

I keep telling all my friends who complain about the gas prices (while driving gas-eating SUVs) that we should be greatful it isn't worse. Then they say, "Oh?" and I tell them what the prices are in GB. Then they go, "Oooooohhh! Ouch!"

Not wanting to get into a 'tax debate'.... it would be interesting to see the same fuel prices compared with all taxes removed. This would really illustrate what the oil companies are doing rather than the comparison shown which is the effect on the consumer.

NP -- I can probably find some links about the effects on car usage and CO2 emissions if you're interested.
