Chanukkah starts at sundown today - so happy Chanukkah! (or however you want to spell it...) It's the celebration of a miracle which happened around 164BC when the Maccabees drove the Syrian-Greek lot out of the Temple (incidentally massacring the section of the Jewish population which could be described as 'reform' for their day, but hey, let's not dwell on that...). They found that there wasn't enough oil to keep the Menorah burning for more than one day, and it would take a week to prepare more. But they lit the menorah anyway and *hey presto* the oil burned for eight days. Fantastic! So I get to eat fried food in commemoration of the miracle - doughnuts all round! Oh, and I get to light lots of candles, which is always cool and groovy.

So there you have it. Eat a doughnut (or as many as you like) over the next eight days for me, and imagine me wishing you a happy chanukkah. *beam*

You know, Sheffield has some really nice buildings if you go down sidestreets (where they haven't managed to pull them all down). And in today's beautiful sunshine, it looks almost beautiful. Very nice.

*grin* Well... ;-) Chag is more of a throat-clear than an utterance, and Sameach is pronounced sam-ay-ach (as in loch). It'd make a good epithet, wouldn't it?

Wow! So in theory you could lock them into a room with a Menorah and lots of doughnuts? Cool! *grin*

about 12.30 and somewhere on the moor sounds good. I will need to go to culpepper some time this week to console cleo (she has to go to the vet next tuesday for minor surgery)
