Oh, everything the Eddings write is to a formula! I think I read the first set, then stopped when I realised that the second set was essentially the first lot of books with the names and place names altered...
Btw The Redemption of Althalus is different and entertaining, but mostly in a 'this was clearly a role-playing game in which the gm allowed the players to each have a funky power, not realising that they'd use said powers to outwit and outfight the baddies really rather easily' kind of way...
