Well, just like that, the weekend is over. And what a weekend! I got to see babies, both and animal. And I sung in my very first gig. Soooo.... here goes...
I went to my ex-work's Christmas do on Friday night with one of my ex-colleagues and good friend, Richard. (Photos to follow.) It was a fancy dress do - medieval, as it was held at St William's College. Oh, it was nice to see people, and it was great to dress up! The building is beautiful, and the entertainment (a guy from Croydon with a reenactment blunt short-sword and axe) was excellent. Richard, the evil magician (thanks to
ravenlas who supplied his accoutrements and my belt and eating set), told fortunes and was suitably sinister. I was a young virtuous woman (stop sniggering!) who had been given to him in repayment of debts by my father, and since then I had not worn a wimple! *gasp* So that was a really nice evening.
Saturday morning I dropped my costume back at the York Theatre Royal costume hire place on Walmgate. I could spend hours there trying on dresses! Thence to VJs with
ravenlas, where there were lots of lovely folks, including the wonderful
vin_petrol and his beautiful daughter,
evie_petrol. She didn't seem to mind my lack of expertise with babies, and happily bounced on my knee, played with my necklace, and tried to mug
st3v3 as his watch was very shiny. Very considerately, she ate all her lunch (well, all that didn't go on her face instead) and didn't throw up, dribble snot, fling herself off my knee, or howl in disgust, so I feel very privileged! She preferred
wey's lap, but as she was trying to eat lunch I sneakily got an extra-long hold. Hurrah!
After that was a trip to Travelling Man and a natter with Al, then home and a little bit of a break before Adam (winolj) called round to give
ravenlas and me a lift out to Huby for my very first gig. I know I had a band a while back (it's where the 'ellenscult' thing comes from - blame JD (winolj)...) but we never *actually* got to the point of doing any gigs. This time, however, my friend Terry (winolj) asked if I'd like to do some singing for him as he was thinking of starting up a second band. We had 2 rehearsals together on a couple of Saturday afternoons (him on guitar) and a sound check, and did half a dozen songs. The gig ended up being a tsunami benefit gig, and raised £1200. A lovely guy called Adam went on first and sang some of his own stuff as well as some Elton John and Frank Sinatra. He accompanied himself on the piano (clavinova) and was really good. It was his first gig too! Gosh. Then Terry and I went on, and (my) Adam took some photos. People clapped and cheered after each song (we even got a whistle) - and someone shouted for more when we finished! Wow! Here's the set list for those who're interested:
Martha's Harbour (All About Eve)
Hurt (NIN, Johnny Cash version)
Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen, Rufus Wainwright / Jeff Buckley version)
I Still Remember (Blackmore's Night)
Are You Lonely (All About Eve)
Jesus in a Camper Van (Robbie Williams)
Then Terry's band took the stage for the main set and
ravenlas and I danced away (and almost got Adam dancing). It was a lovely evening! I'm still bouncing! Hurrah! Thanks to Clare, Terry's wife, who is wonderful and had prepared some light snacks for after the sound check (when I couldn't have eaten much anyway - nervous? never! lol). More thanks to Adam, for driving us out there and sticking around through the sound check and gig and driving us back again. Even more thanks to
ravenlas for being there, and to Terry, for asking me to sing in the first place and being such a good guitarist. *happy dance*
And I would have publicised it and asked people to come along - but the tickets were all sold quite a while ago. :( Next time, however, I'll let you all know. So you can come along. Or stay away... ;-)
Oh, and more babies: we got to meet Terry and Clare's 10 week old puppy, Maybe. She's adorable!
I didn't get up early on Sunday. Should've done, but didn't. So
ravenlas and I were a little late arriving at
st3v3 and
cfw's house to help test Ariadne. James (winolj) and
eddie777 were there already, doing sterling work. We got some testing done and discussed features and future development. I have more documentation to do. Babies, again - we got to play with young kitten, Ziggy. *beam* Then we cycled home and got in to find a poorly Leo and a concerned
ant_girl. :(
It didn't help any that the washing machine had stopped draining... All my fault, I freely admit it. You're supposed to unscrew the front drain plug after each wash (or so) and give it a rinse out. I've been forgetting to, and now I know why forgetting things is a Bad IdeaTM. I was letting water out into a small tub, bit by bit, when the drain plug stopped screwing back in. Cue water all over the floor, and much frantic scrabbling from me to drag out sheets and towels from the washing basket to mop up. Then much laying down of newspapers and slinging them out of the back door. (If anyone wants to make papier-mache, come round!) Oh, and having to stop Leo dashing out while the door was open. And the pair of us trying to figure out why the drain plug wasn't screwing back in. (Sorted, now.) Then a mad dash by me to tidy up somewhat and get stuff ready to head over to
lucius101's house via the chinese to go play in a werewolf game.
*phew*
By 9pm I was ready to go to sleep! Still, we're not dead yet, and we wasted a team of baddies. At least, we're pretty sure they're baddies. There was a nasty goo-spitting one, and one which tried to pull its bottom and top halves together after being cut in two, and a few others...
Oh, and the final baby? Nick!
evieb's young son, who is, as always, wonderful.
Got home, fished out washing (washing machine still working, yay!), emptied dishwasher, restacked dishwasher, sorted out some stuff on computers (thanks to
ravenlas and finally got to bed around 12:30am. Then I had weird dreams and thought I was dozing even though I probably wasn't.
And today, I was up far too early, and I have far too much to do before I go home! Also, I went climbing this lunchtime, riding that adrenaline high, and had fun. Nothing too challenging, but quite a lot of it.
So, that was my weekend. I need another one to recover from it! lol
Some gig photos are here, courtesy of Terry and Clare. More will be forthcoming when I can bribe Adam to get his film developed...
Medieval photos will be up soon.
