It's legen- wait for it... )

wait for it... DARY!

Oh, now I remember what I meant to say! Duh! I'm on tumblr, under the username ellenscult. As usual. Another day, another sandbox, but this time with more animated gifs!

This afternoon, thanks to Whatever, I read this article. Although it's very sad, it reminds me yet again how glad I am that we have civil unions in the UK, how glad I am that one by one countries are making same-sex marriage legal, that states in the US (despite California's Proposition 8) are moving in the right direction.

It shouldn't even be an issue. If both parties are adult and want to marry, sex and gender should be the least of our issues. Why should I have the right (and incredible good fortune) to be married to the love of my life just because he's male and I'm female, but not if we're both men, both women? I'm bi; I could have easily fallen in love with another woman and that wouldn't have been an issue for me, my family or (I'm pretty sure just about all of) my friends.

Marriage is where you combine your heart and your community and all the legal stuff into one declaration:

This is other half of my soul, the person who is most important to me, the person I want to spend my life with.

So I don't see how so many people can regard this as the collapse-of-civilization zombiepocalypse. It's not. With death a certainty, why put the survivor through such extra trouble? To deny people the right to marry their loved one is cruel. It's inhumane.

I do have a problem with places that allow (with parental consent) young teenagers to marry. This is right, but same-sex marriage is wrong? My mind boggles. Looking at you, Alabama, looking at you.

Other stuff:

Gakked from [livejournal.com profile] rhube, Uncomfortable Plot Summaries - very funny indeed.

From [livejournal.com profile] jaylake's link salad, vintage sexist ads.

ETA: [livejournal.com profile] spindr and anyone else in Sheffield who uses cash machines on Fargate and The Moor - there's a new cash machine scam going on, so be careful. Verified by staff at HSBC and a press release by South Yorkshire Police today, so probably not a hoax.

Dropping out of sight... )

The conference was really good. I didn't run off with $DiscoStu (shudder) or $BobHoskins (a really nice guy who said to tell Jerry he's a very lucky man). I didn't disgrace myself or embarrass the company. I did go swimming in my pirate bikini. The after-dinner speaker was Dominick Holland who seemed a tad bemused by his IT audience.

I am back. Today is deadline day. The help file is nearly finished. Which means....

Real Life should be resumed shortly! By dinnertime, no less! Hurrah.

Then all I have to do is open the post, find and sign the remortgage documents (and hope the offer's still valid), clean and tidy the entire house, make medieval outfits for 4 people, charge through a slushpile, finish 2 short stories and finish editing a novel, and the weekend's a good 'un!

Well, maybe I'll save some of it for, yanno, the evenings I'll actually have free when this help file is done.

Last night was my last dressmaking class. The moderator came in and looked at all my stuff, as well as other people's work. He ticked all the boxes. I passed.

Farewell, adieu, o world of learning. Yes, it's a bit ranty. )

For those who are interested in such things, this is my pile o' stuff:
  • 1 blouse, flower-patterned, cotton with lycra
  • 1 kirtle, dark green wool with linen part-lining, handsewn
  • 2 linen shifts, white, handsewn
  • embroidery project: C16th blackwork on the cuffs of one of the shifts, folder with write-up and examples
  • textiles project: naalbound hat & mittens in Asle stitch, felted naalbound bag in Oslo stitch, folder with write-up and examples
  • sketchbook with original designs
  • craft book showing pattern construction
  • folder containing samples of sewing techniques

Yeah, it was a good year.

From [livejournal.com profile] littleangel_103, this video about CFS/ME.

The elephant in the corner of my room. )

I'm one of the lucky ones. I'll probably always have some remnant of CFS dragging around my system. But I didn't move on to full-blown ME, and for that I am supremely thankful.

Some people aren't so lucky. If you can, please watch the video and pass it along.

I know I've been a bit lax in wishing people happy birthday lately (doh!), so here goes (in date order):

Belated Happy Birthday, [livejournal.com profile] thirstypixel, [livejournal.com profile] spindr, Fleur, and for last Saturday, Kate and [livejournal.com profile] ravenlas! And just to be on the safe side, Happy Birthday [livejournal.com profile] makyo for tomorrow!

My apologies if I've missed anyone...

Last week? Busy. This week? Even more busy. This weekend? [livejournal.com profile] ravenlas' birthday treat is a trip to London to see Wicked and Spamalot. Yay! Next week? Almost certainly busy again. Ho hum.

If you want to see me, I am hereby declaring Thursday nights 'open house night'. I'll be home some time between 6 and 6:30, barring train problems. You're welcome to come round and visit. And if you tell me in advance you're coming, I may even be able to provide biscuits, sandwiches, hot drinks, mulled wine, yada yada.

No, I'm not available to come visit you, not this week or next week, and maybe not the week after. Sorry, that's just the way it goes. I have a Chinese exam coming up, a dressmaking course, and a writing/proof-reading career, outside of my full-time job. To say nothing of 4 siblings, several parents and assorted friends to make presents for. And that makes the run-up to Christmas rather busy.

Oh, and I have a wedding to plan. Btw, anyone coming to my hen do? [livejournal.com profile] ayrton_nix needs to know numbers, I think.

I have the confirmation email. We're booked into the Little Church of the West, 1.30pm (local time) on February 29th 2008. You're all invited. And yes, there will be a webcam feed you'll be able to access for a month afterwards.

It's the pre-wedding travel arrangements that are making me cross-eyed right now...

We're probably flying from Manchester, there being a lack of ships heading across the Atlantic in February, for some reason. And no dirigible service at all. But where to?

We could fly direct to Las Vegas and spend the time in and around the city.
We could fly to San Francisco, have a few days there, then either fly or drive to Las Vegas.
We could fly to New York, stop overnight, then get the train out to Reno. And then somehow get down to Vegas. Which I'd actually like to do. But [livejournal.com profile] ravenlas doesn't fancy spending several days stuck on a train.

So, peeps - any ideas? Suggestions? Help! My head is 'splodey!
